Kieran’s SBC – Poster Competition

This week, Kieran wants you to create a science poster. You could make your poster about anything science related. Perhaps a poster about the human body or electricity or even space! The world of science is your oyster!

Challenge: Design a Science Poster

Take your posters to Seal Class for judging.

Good luck!

Kieran’s SBC

Here’s a new competition for all you science fans!

Challenge: What would you cure?

🌡💉💊

Would you create a cure for the common cold? Would you cure cancer? What else could you cure?

Entries to Kieran (Seals)

Good luck!

Easter SBC

Another great idea from Kieran.

I bet many of you were hoping for some sunshine this holiday. Unfortunately, the forecast looks a bit rubbish. Why not make the most of the weather and do a cool project on it.

CHALLENGE: Do a project on any type of weather.

EXAMPLE: Make a rain catcher and see how much rain you can collect over the holidays.

The SBC will continue until the end of the year, run by Kieran Gaywood and myself (via the power of the internet). Please take your entries to Seal class for judging.

Good luck!

SBC #Guestcompetition

This week’s competition comes from Kieran, the most dedicated science blog competitor there has ever been.

TASK: Design your own planet.

You will need to include:

  • a name
  • a climate
  • habitats
  • whether there is water

Example: Planet Kieran

It has animals and plants but no humans. There is water and it was names after its discoverer, Kieran.

Good luck!

SBC #ivelostcount

So science fans… Kieran’s been asking for a challenge, and I don’t want to disappoint, so here’s a mind blowing science showdown for the grand prize of a merit AND a bundle of science goodies! I’ll run the competition for two weeks to give you time to do something really good.

Challenge: ECO SCHOOL

Our school is great, but it could be more environmentally friendly. As a scientist, it is your job to think of and design an eco-friendly school that runs entirely on sustainable energy. Why stop there? Could you convince your whole class to walk to school for a week? Could you convince your teacher to walk/cycle/car share to school for a week?

Whatever you do, make sure to present it in a clear way so that I can judge what you have done. Think outside the box.

Deadline: Friday 4th March

Good luck!

Mystery ‘Star Jelly’

So my mum found this weird stuff in the field whilst walking the dogs. What do you think it is? There are a lot of theories as to what ‘Star Jelly’ actually is on the internet. Can you find out what it could be?

It looks like melted rainbows to me!

SBC #10

Task: Design a potion/cure

Over the centuries, scientists have created cures for all sorts of illnesses and diseases. Polio was completely wiped out in this country thanks to science.

Can you design a potion to cure an illness? It can be silly if you like.

Example: Crushed up beetles mixed with chilli and garlic, dissolved in a glass of milk to cure the common cold. WARNING: may not actually work and may be disgusting.

SBC #9

Science & Poetry

In year four, we’ve been studying poetry. This gave me an idea!

Challenge: Write a science poem.

Your poem can be funny or it can be serious. It doesn’t have to rhyme, but rhyming can be nice.

Example:

In the ground and in the sky,

Science is all around.

How things float and sink and fly,

Science is all around.

Dissolving, boiling, melting things down,

Science is all around.

Why we smile and why we frown,

Science is all around.

SBC #8

Inventions: Can you invent a machine that helps you with your morning routine (getting dressed, brushing teeth and having breakfast)?

Example:

A travelator like they have in airports that runs through every room of your house. You hop out of bed onto the travelator which takes you over to your wardrobe. Then it takes you through a carwash style machine for your shower, hair drying and tooth brushing. It then takes you to the kitchen where your breakfast is waiting.

You can draw your machine, or describe it. The most inventive invention will win!

Have fun!

SBC #7

Whoops… I completely forgot about the SBC! How could I?!

SEA TURTLES

Challenge: There are quite a few different species of turtle living in our oceans. Can you find out the most interesting facts about sea turtles?

Example: Leatherback turtles can hold their breath for up to 85 minutes!

Good luck!
